Voices from the Dark Podcast

E35: Artists #23, Featuring Robert Grant

Robert Grant, poet, is my guest for this episode, during which we have a great conversation about his work, his life, his art and the influence that each one has upon the others. He shares insights from his artistic journey, which include finding your own voice, the value of making mistakes and the importance of finishing things.

We discuss some of the challenges he has faced as well as some of the strange and wonderful moments he has experienced throughout his career, all of which have fed into his work. We also talk about the pleasure he gets from making people’s lives better through poetry and how helping people started his career as a producer. Listen to this great conversation full of tangents, tidbits and… and more! Be sure to check out Robert’s book Beat the Grass, and follow his film work at Twisted Reel Media. Enjoy!

E33: Artists #21, Featuring Marko Ivic

Marko Ivic, musician and interdisciplinary artist, is my guest in this episode of the Voices from the Dark Artists series. He shares with us how his career took him from Venezuela to Croatia and Germany, the way he balances his classical training with his experimental projects, and how his sense of “being in a place is hijacked” by freelancing as an artist.

We discuss his view that there usually needs to be a special reason behind making art, since doing so is not always easy and not always profitable. We also discuss his relationship to his audience as a performer and his goal of deconstructing traditional performances. Listen to our great conversation for more about Marko and his work. You can keep up with him via his website markoivic.info. Enjoy!

E32: Artists #20, Featuring Tau Tau Menghan

Tau Tau Menghan on set of film “No Zuo No Die”

In this episode I had the opportunity to speak with Tau Tau Menghan, a Berlin-based filmmaker, novelist and storyteller originally from China. She shares her experiences in the Berlin filmmaking community, the differences between the Chinese and German art scenes, and the many boundaries that she has broken through on her artistic journey. She also shares the challenges she has faced balancing filmmaking and novel writing, how being weird is almost a prerequisite to being an artist and some of the amazing stories that have inspired and resulted from her work.

Listen to our conversation to find out about her relationship to German trees, what gets her up in the morning, and how she puts it all together to make what she calls a “stew.” Keep up with her work via her website itautau.com, and check out one of her latest projects “No Zuo No Die” on imdb.com. Enjoy!

E31: Artists #19, Featuring Clare Saponia

In this episode I sit down with Clare Saponia, a London-born writer and artist. We discuss a variety of topics, including her mixed family origins and European identity, her passion for language and culture, her holistic approach to life, and how these things have inspired and influenced her on her artistic journey.

She shares with us how she accomplishes what she calls the eternal juggling act of being an artist and making a living. She also shares some of the wisdom she has collected on her journey, including how she views writing as a way of connecting with herself and thus with other people. Perhaps most importantly, she reminds us to listen to our bodies and just breathe. Keep up with Clare via her websites claresaponia.co.uk and clearstarblog.wordpress.com. Enjoy!

Special thanks to the folks at RBL Berlin and GlogauAIR for providing a cozy space to talk.

E30: Artists #18, Featuring Naco Fichetti

In this episode I have a conversation with amazing Argentine painter and illustrator Naco Fichetti, a good friend of my family from down south in Argentina. We speak about his journey as an artist, which has taken him from his native city of Viedma, Rio Negro, to Buenos Aires and back. We trace his unique artist’s story from his first steps drawing cars as a youth to finally having his own workshop in Viedma and traveling internationally to develop his craft. We also discuss his love of British Rock and Argentine football, both of which he features often in his work. Hear it for yourselves here. Keep up with Naco via his page Naco Fichetti Caricaturas – Dibujos – Pinturas. Enjoy!

Special thanks to the people, places and spirits of Viedma!

This is the first international episode of Voices from the Dark and hopefully just one of many more to come. It is also the first official episode of 2019, so once again, Happy New Year!

E29: Artists #17, Featuring Blake Worrell

In this episode I interview musician and award-winning mobile filmmaker Blake Worrell. Blake is an old acquaintance of mine from Berlin who is in the process of relocating elsewhere. I caught up with him during his visit to the city, where he was giving mobile filmmaking classes over the weekend. He was hungry, so we went to grab some food, after which we discussed his views on how artists should mentally prepare themselves for the artist’s lifestyle. Blake’s straight-forward philosophy on how to persevere as an artist is deceptively simple and is a mixture of self-actualization and a can-do attitude that focuses on the journey rather than the destination. Hear it for yourselves here! Keep up with Blake on his website blakeworrell.com. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Shiloh for their time, space and tasty food!

This is the last episode of 2018… More to come in January 2019! Happy Holidays, people!

E28: Voices from the Dark Specials #2, Featuring Sgambetto

In this episode I have the extreme pleasure to converse with the enigmatic host of the Sgambetto radio show, Emanuele (Emanuello, Manuelo etc.), who also happens to be the proprietor of the local Neukoelln bar, LaBettolab.

Special thanks as usual to RBL Berlin. This is the last episode of the Voices from the Dark–RBL Berlin 2018 collaboration. It’s been a great ride! The adventure will continue…

In addition to providing some news on upcoming shows and projects for Voices from the Dark, I speak with Signore Sgambetto about his plans for the new year, what his bar and his radio show are all about, and our planned collaboration. He shares details on how his show is a combination of his personal imagination, his inner life and his outlook on the world. We also discuss the importance of dialects in poetry, the power of spontaneity and the living experimental art space that is LaBettolab.

E27: The Spectrum #3, Featuring the Left-Right Spectrum 2

In this episode Neo and I continue our conversation about the mysterious left–right spectrum, coming at you semi-live from the beautiful Horse bar in lovely Neukoelln, Berlin. We go off on several glorious tangents but focus on the topic at hand, going into further detail about the definitions of the terms left and right. We also try to get into the minds of people who might label themselves with these terms. We create profiles of this imaginary group, getting into demographics such as race, sex, and gender, emphasizing the idea that these terms are insufficient. And of course, we enjoy some tasty beverages. After the live recording we had a great time with Kai the bartender and some of Horse’s regular patrons.

E26: Voices from the Dark Specials #1, A Retrospective

In this episode we present clips from the first five episodes of Voices from the Dark, all of which happen to be part of the Artists series, featuring interviews with Domink Watin, Grace Nicholas, Lalo Gomes, Alma, and Leanne Rivers. It’s a sort of retrospective episode intended to give listeners an idea of how things have progressed since the beginning. Voices from the Dark is a podcast that is as much about the medium of podcasting itself as it is about anything else. In these clips, you can see the difference between the various audio environments featured in each episode as well as a development of the recording techniques and equipment used.

Thanks as usual to the folks at RBL Berlin and LaBettolab. This is the penultimate episode of the 2018 collaboration between RBL and Voices from the Dark. The last episode will air on November 18th. Future projects with both RBL and LaBettolab will be coming out soon in addition to regular Voices from the Dark programming. Stay tuned!
